| MAY 11, 2003 SLUE'S Position: Withheld Field notes: I. C. CONOLLEY Cavers: R. S. Stewart, I. C. Conolley, M. Taylor (Continued from History Cave) Stef is not easily dissuaded. Lead on McDuff. We all jump into the car and drive to the location. Are you sure this is the place? Yes this is Mr Slue property. It goes from here to there - all the cane up to there and then it's Worthy Park Estate. Stef gets out and with his chart begins to match. This is more like it. This is the type of shelter cave we are looking for and yes this is definitely the light brown rock Stef has indicated we are looking for - breccia, he said. And we didn't have to walk. Can you see any fossils in them. Sorry but I don't see any - but then I am not 100% sure that I know enough about the shape of those prehistoric rodents to identify their calcified remains. Nothing looks interesting however. Only sure thing I say is that it looks like the rock in the picture. Yes Stef says and backs off again trying to match up the location and his map. A significant extent of this hill contains shelter caves, not continuous but within some metres of each other. Stef is uncomfortable about the match at first. It looks pretty close to me. The shrubbery is different. The area has bushed up. It's no longer as free of vegetation as indicated in the photo. The cave, as well, has undergone some "developmental" work making it into somewhat of a temporary workman's residence. I figure a couple rocks here and there might have been cut away in the process. I go in search of other possibly better fits while Stef does his photography and GPS work. I comb the hillside. I see some other shelters but still the first is the best fit. I think we found it. Why haven't we seen this type of rock in the Cockpit Country caves? Over to you Professor. |
