Jan 24, 2004 ROEHAMPTON SCHOOL CAVE Field notes: I. C. CONOLLEY Cavers: I. C. Conolley, R. S. Stewart, S. McCall, M. Bellinger It is Saturday January 24, 2004 and we are heading to the Roehampton School Cave. We stop at Bramble Pen and Rohan "Nyah" Ranger joins us. He has been caving with Stef before and wants to be on board again. We roll up to the school and in through the gate. The security guard is there. We state our business. Stef, Mark, Sarah, Nyah, and myself. We know where to go and proceed. No need for ropes here and yes getting to the cave is through a cow pasture and the likelihood of ticks - can’t get away from them, can we. We scramble down into the entrance - not very large about 3 by 1 1/2 metres. We immediately see that there is a water course here. Water flows into this cave. We are surveying so I am at the stretching end of the tape and move ahead of Stef who is measuring and taking compass bearings. This cave deserves flagging. I am getting here a more than slight reminder of Marta Tick Cave in Quickstep - not as complicated. But we keep sliding through and measuring. We are way and suddenly someone sees a cockroach. Eh?? Where did he come from. Well there must be some small opening up top that he has found and is coming down from. Maybe there is a garbage heap up there and he has somehow "percolated" down to see what he can find I these depths. It’s not like there is garbage here. Ah well... a stray! We move one until... the cave roof diminishes into a foot and a half into one foot and stalactites preventing further movement. That’s it. Survey done! (More notes for Roehampton School Cave) |
