
8. APPRAISAL OF EQUIPMENT
Of the compasses, the Brunton Eclipse proved to be the most precise and rugged and is recommended for all institutions or individuals who will be orienteering on a regular basis. One of WRC's Silva Rangers, a 15-year-old compass, required over-adjustment of its magnetic declination to align to magnetic north. The bezel (azimuth ring) on this compass and on one of the Suuntos wobbled slightly, which could account for the inaccuracies of setting the magnetic declination. The Suunto KB-14s and Suunto Navigators with Quadrant [0-90-0] bezel were useful for demonstrating different types of compasses, but neither model was appropriate for
