B.†††††††† Research Project Information

1.†††††††† Short description of the project including its objectives (Attach copy or use separate sheet if necessary).

A systematic physical survey will be done of caves and sinkholes in the Parish of St James to identify systems with existing bat colonies. The entrance locations will be GPS referenced to an accuracy of under +/- 5 metres for future GIS use and will be of assistance in future conservation efforts involving the biota of the caves of St James. The final report will be made available to NEPA, the WRC, and all other interested researchers, and will be published on www.jamaicancaves.org.

2.†††††††† Location of the project and sites at which research will be undertaken (Attach map if necessary).

††††††††††† Please find attached maps and an accompanying list that will identify the targeted caves. It is expected that new systems will be discovered during the course of the project; these will be added to the database as they are found.

3.†††††††† Duration of the project.

††††††††††† The project will be carried out in a series of 5 sessions, of 2 - 3 weeks each, that will take place from Jan 1, 2004 to Jan 1, 2005. A permit for 12 months is requested.

4.†††††††† Expected output at end of the project.

The existing Jamaican Cave Registry will be updated to list the names and GPS locations for all of the caves and sinkholes in the Parish of St James including those that possess extant bat colonies. The database will also record caves that once supplied habitat but are now degraded. Every cave system in the Parish of St James that can be found will be studied and listed in the database with details of all pertinent factors and parameters, and it is hoped that this will serve as an aid to researchers in fields other than biology.(See attached Field Data Collection Sheet).

5.†††††††† Project significance/benefits.

Caves supply the only habitat on the island for many of the species of bats found in Jamaica as well as a habitat for many species of invertebrates. The importance of these creatures to the ecology of Jamaica suggests that a systematic survey be done to supply baseline data for future studies. Although identification of individual species will not be attempted, the simple observation of which caves continue to contain healthy, undisturbed roosts of mixed species of bats, and those that once did but no longer do, will be of great value in the determination of conservation targets in this field.Additionally, this project will update Alan Finchamís Jamaican Cave Registry. The locations of many caves in the registry are poorly geo-referenced; the principal investigator has noted that many caves are located over 500 metres from the documented positions.

6.†††††††† Why was Jamaica selected as the research site?

The Principal Investigator has been exploring the caves and sinkholes of Jamaica for over a decade and has observed a steady decline in the biological health of these underground systems. It is hoped that this research project will help to preserve the beauty, and value, of the cave systems of the island.
