COMFORT HALL ST JAMES CAVE

Field notes: I. C. CONOLLEY

Cavers: I. C. Conolley, R. S. Stewart, S. McCall, M. Bellinger

We move on to Comfort Hall Cave. Nyah says he knows where it is. And yes it is through a pasture and up into the mountainside. We scramble up and climb in. It’s dry. Not much sign of water flushing through but yes maybe there is a periodic trickle. I poke around. We find our way through and there is another entrance further up. We come out through there. I look around. The cave is full of pleurodonts. Could Tainos have been here. I search in the little crevices of the cave. I comb through the loose stone and find a bone - very dry bone. I pick it up. I’ll be taking it with me for further checking. It is a small bone about two and a half inches and broken. I pack a few of the pleurodonts as well. If there were Tainos here they were certainly having a feast. The place was chock full of shells.

The others were pouring out. I did not flag as it was a straightforward cave but I remembered there was one turn off and did not want to have to go searching for my way out so cut my search short and hurried to join the others.

That was it for the day. Two good caves.

But we had searched for another further up from Reohampton. We found something but it was almost blocked by garbage and guarded but several wasp nests. This one needed planning. We could get around the garbage but the wasps were a definite deterrent. We had to get enough spray to eliminate them before we could brave it. This would be for another day.

It was then we moved on to Comfort Hall Cave.
