Clover Hill Cave was visited on the afternoon of Feb 11, 2010, by Stewart, as recon for a NEPA bat monitoring project in St Ann. It has the dubious distinction of being the most inaccurate of the the GSD positions received via Jamaica Underground to date, at 5.2km from the listed coordinates. Clover Hill district is far to the south of the JU coords, which actually plot in Grierfield. I'm about 90% confident that it is the same site. Much asking of the local people revealed no other caves in Clover Hill, just a sinkhole which is quite close to the cave in the gully below. The JU entry follows: "Entrance on a steep hillside about 120m west of the road to Phoenix Park from Grierfield. In west bank of a small gully. A small ascending chamber, 8m wide and 8m high." The cave is a dome-shaped ascending shelter about 12m wide, and 10m high, extending into a steep hill about 14m, which is a minor roost for Artibeus jamaicensis. The entire cave is well-lit. It is on the west side of a gully 140m from the nearest road, which is just to the west of the Griefield road. Access is by way of a 5m scramble up tree roots. The sinkhole is at 18 13 52.1, 77 09 17.5. Tossing in of rocks suggest it is 30+ metres deep. A rough sketch map of the cave will be found below: ![]() |
